“ . . . A Little Something Extra”
There’s a word from South Louisiana (Polly spent several years working in New Orleans and hails from Louisiana) spoken in Cajun French meaning “just a little something extra.” The word is Lagniappe (lan – yap) ! And this section of the Friday Harbour website means just that. First, everyone is invited to use the link below to access a piece of writing by one of the greatest paleontologists in the world, Stephen Jay Gould. His wise and wonderful essay on the use of statistics in the face of his own death (he died in 2002 of cancer) has become a classic. As a researcher and scientist who used statistics all the time, his writing speaks to all who work in the arts and sciences of human behavior, often using research and the statistics they contain to inform their work.
Other items of interest will appear in this space on a quarterly basis – ready for viewing in January, April, July, and October. Enjoy!
